Digital Story Telling

Beverly posted a digital story on my forum about two brothers  who  both died on 9/11. It was narrated by their father, and definitely  articulated the compelling nature of digital storytelling, and demonstrated how an emotional component  can effect your ability to retain information in your long term memory.Although the context of the story was obviously not uplifting,it still brought home the relevance of emotion in relation to an students cognition, and how both negative and positive feelings add equally to a persons schemata.

Case Studies,past Digital Projects

In my profession as a automotive mechanic, our  more advanced training  scenario’s at Lexus Canada almost exclusively revolve around case studies, so this concept is very familiar to me.I feel, like digital storytelling, that it can be applied to  almost any learning situation.[My brother is in med. school, and they use case studies all the time].  Case studies allow students to self direct their learning, encourage development of critical thinking and reasoning skills , and allows them to progress from conceptualization  stage to application. Case studies seem like a great way to assess a students ability to progress beyond dualistic  thinking, to more complex stages of intellectual, and ethical development,[transformative learning]. It is a learning tool that I will definitely  incorporate into my classroom.

After watching the digital project,Inclusion,a strategy for adult education,I was impressed by the fact that  the main aspects of the strategy were based on creating a learning community. The lesson examples showed how the students applied active learning, and in groups, not only solved, but also  demonstrated solutions to the problems they were presented with. This seems like a great way to promote student engagement and synergy, with everyone being actively included and responsible for activities presented in the class. This empowers students, and makes them partners in the learning process.

Role Play,Thoughts on Past Digital Project

The digital video presentation on role play outlined the multitude of benefits from this type of learning model. It brings together so many learning strategies such as active and collaborative  learning, expectancy, value, critical thinking ,all adding to a students schemata. It also empowers students as partners in their own learning, promoting self motivation and engagement by connecting lessons to real life scenarios, defining and giving purpose to the exercise.

Reflection On Past Students Digital Projects

After watching some  very interesting digital projects ,I picked three examples that I felt would be important to the course I  hope to teach one day. [Automotive instructor].

1. Field Trips:  This is  a great way to add  expectancy and value to what a student is learning. By seeing and talking to people that have been through the course, and succeeded in their profession, is a great motivator. The students can also get some real world hands on experience. This interaction  promotes active learning,  and can integrate cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains . It is also an opportunity for a person to critically assess their choice of profession. I have heard countless time  how people have entered a career after finishing school, and realized that it was nothing like they had expected.

2.Connecting Communities In Education: Learning communities are a very important part of an engaged classroom. When students feel comfortable and supported in their program, they are motivated. This promotes collaboration and innovation, for both teachers and students.Involving outside institutions, organizations, and industry provides group learning opportunities. This is very important in  an  automotive  program, where apprenticeships, practicums or internships provide valuable hand on experience. The students can work with a certified technician, and learn and interact together in a positive learning community.

3.Demonstration: In an automotive program, demonstration plays a major role in the teaching process. It is a strategy where the teacher shows the student exactly what to do.In order to maintain the students focus, you must explain the rational clearly, model the course material in a practical, efficient manner, and disperse or take breaks during the demo to allow for the application and practice of the required skill set. I have always found visual aids are an effective way to get your point across. Being able to touch something, rather than just seeing a picture or diagram, seems to add relevance to the project.Another benefit of the demonstration model is that it has a low probability of cultural issues, which is an important consideration in today’s diverse teaching environments

Getting The feeling Of How To Learn

As the course goes on, I find myself  constantly re-visiting concepts that I thought I fully understood. As I gain more exposure,I have come to realize I’m just barely ,cognitively speaking, scratching the surface. One example is my notion of Self directed learning. At first I felt it was a way to autonomously gain new knowledge. After further reflection,I am beginning  to discover that it encompasses so much more.Being able to self evaluate,[Recognizing and correcting your weaknesses is a strength], finding interconnections in course material as a way to improve your retention, and becoming intrinsically engaged in what your are doing, are just a few ways that I feel elaborate on this learning model.

Acquiring the basics !

During my facilitation of my discussion forum on creative thinking,Doug made a point that  resonated with me  personally . He wrote that in order to be creative in any given situation, you must first acquire the basics. This seems like common sense, but I’d never really thought of creativity as being a skill that you learn, and develop. It made me realize how little effort I’ve put in to exploring my  own individual, intrinsic creativity. This course is allowing me to delve into being creative, and get out of my comfort zone, something I probably wouldn’t have done on my own.

Creative Thinking Forum

I’m getting ready to facilitate my first discussion forum,[creative thinking].I have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from participating in my classmates postings, and the interaction of the online learning community has  been a very positive experience.I’m  a bit nervous about developing and implementing  my facilitation skills ,but look forward to the challenge.

Growth Mindset

There was a interesting forum by Janice Nielsen on the topic of growth mindset. The chart showing the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mind set was excellent.Over the years at my job,I’ve run into both types, and wish I had the Janices posting to articulate my perspectives and feelings at the time.I like to think I practice a growth mind set,but must admit that I have personally engaged in a closed  mindset,[usually when I’m stressed ] and must work diligently to recognize when I’m doing this. Thanks again to Janice for making the differences so clear.

Power of inroverts

I just finished watching the video,Power of introverts by Susan Cain.It resonated with me personally,as I am more of an introvert, and she  has a wonderful way of putting a spin on social ideas and perspectives in regards to how people interact. From education to work environments, being an extrovert is deemed necessary, even though,as she pointed out, there is no link between being gregarious and having good ideas.I look forward to writing my journal on this subject.
